During his younger days in Anson Rad Ken was quite a timid boy who depended on his friend Leng,to help him and to fight for him.Whenever in trouble there was always Leng running in aid of him.So he never lifted a finger to gain victory over all his enemies and no one dared challenged him to a fight.
In Immigration Road the battle was changed and he had to defend himself without Leng.Being small in size he was a pick for any fight and most of the time walked away in shame. But one day he stood his ground and put up an excellent battle against a bigger guy, that made him a hero for a while. His anger suddenly emerged from here and was never afraid to fight for himself any more.
He loafed around for a while and even went banner carriers for a day where he learned the hypocritical behavior of some so called friends of the family. His rage against such a society grew and lodged embedded in his system.
In the plantation his family were humbled to the extreme,no friends ever visited them at all.The only people were his mother's immediate family and his father's sister who helped them every now and then. The aid from the Auntie was not that big but it helped in the time of need.
Ken by now a teenager valued those who help them in time of need.So young in age yet had to know who were friends and who were foes.By now Ken was known for his aggressive temper.Circumstances had forced him to defend himself all the time and now that he had tasted defeat as well as victory he was no more afraid of losing and dared take on anyone.
He met two lovely girls at the plantation and was some time infatuated with them. One of them a shop keeper's daughter, she was slightly older than him.Ken had some delightful moments with her but that stopped as she was courted by some other who came in car. Then there a beautiful tapper whom he shot by mistake at her back side with a catapult, one morning. After his apology they became friends but that love never blossomed as her friends teased Ken as a small boy.Telling him to wait till he grow older.
His friends in the plantation were mostly tappers children and his best friends were subsequently the Yap brothers, the sons of a building Contractor of the plantation. They were, he and his brother's playmates and fishing buddies. Then there was an old man who bragged about his young time adventures which turned to be what a bluffs.Nevertheless they enjoyed those big tales and laughed over them.Anyway those days with no television and with nothing to do those became a sort of past time for them.
Within those time his sister passed her Senior Cambridge with an excellent result and later secured a place to study at Brinsford Lodge to become a teacher. So she left for united Kingdom. That made the parents very happy and reduced the burden of their parents.
His raged for this society multiplied by many folds. So when he was challenged to a fight with a guy almost double his size,he pounded him with all his might but failed to bring him down.
Subsequently to be punished by the discipline master in a public canning. He stood proudly to receive his punishment like a man.Knowing that one day if that day cometh it will be sweet, sweet revenge. No one ever corrected him with, "To err is human and to forgive divine",but were he be explained this very fact would he have repented?.
No,it would have made matter worst, because his wretched life was filled with anger so many odds stacked against him.His good friend introduced him to a beautiful and charming girl and it was love at first sight for him.So happy was he that he escorted her to school and to Church almost everyday but all those ended abruptly as the girl's second mother stepped in between and politely send his packing.
That apparently turned out to be the saddest day of his entire life, for that on leaving her house his tears flowed like streams of water that flooded his face.He cycled and cycled until they were dried up with no more to tears to flow.He felt lost and in anger he mixed with gangsters and turned bad, real bad. Before long he was a notorious one.
He also lost a dear friend as he was fell down at the wharf and was drowned. His body was recovered three days later after Ken and another friend went with the family to look for after the Police failure to locate it.So he lost afraid who could guide him.
Ken later did well in his History paper because of the notes he gave him.
He attended church services at the Anglican church and met Padre Harper and wife and they were very helpful but that did not saved him.He seldom attend Church thereafter he lost his girl friend,he became worst- an angry young and with nothing to cling to in times of need,no one to help him fight bigger guys.He had to fight it out himself.
There many holiday trips to Kuala Lumpur just to be with his grandmother,Ken unlike others always kept to himself.Although he met many new friends he never got deeply involved with them both boys and girls. With the passing of his grandmother both brothers still went to Kuala Lumpur for holidays.
There he noticed the snobbish behavior of the rich, within him formed bad opinions about them that was why he never went too close to any of them. There were trips to Port Dickson where his eyes strained on to the wide open sea, wandering what were installed for him in the future with so many failures.
His rages was shown in his joining a gang to roam the streets of Teluk Anson, thus what termed to be a harmless gang turned into a fearful foursome for many. All can be exhibited in their movements so much so many gangs wanted to merge with them which they flatly refused. He was nearly napped by the Police as having involved in a would be gang fight which never took place because they escaped the Police dragnet just in time.
Marked by the Police as dangerous and were waiting at the wing to nap them if only they made a false move, but they never had that opportunity.Ken was all the time aware of them but it was out of rage when he lost his new fond love that he became one of them.Outrageous as it seem to be but that was a fact to reckon with.
His family shifted to Pasir Bedamar where both brothers stayed at a rented room and their mother had to work some where else as rubber tapper and their father went on to teach in small fishing village some in Bagan Datoh areas. Here too Ken met another beautiful girl, the tenant's daughter.Tall and slim as she was but Ken was never interested as his mind was filled that first girl.Though the girl was eying him he dared not looked straight into hers, what a shame?.
To being a gangster was not the way out,and to continue he cannot escape from the dragnet of the law.So he left them to join the plantation sector after his school certificate examinations, and never renewed his acquaintances with them thereafter..He planned to do well in his future endeavour then made a right turn to propose to her.Can he do it,was left to be seen?.Carrying that love he joined the plantation.
